Adaptive Features

Overview

A cactus storing water in a fat green stem, a water lily with leaves that float, every species carries inherited features that fit it to its surroundings. These adaptive features are the visible result of natural selection, and learning to read them lets you explain how an organism survives where it lives.

In this lesson you will define an adaptive feature, practise describing the adaptations of a species from a picture or description, and (for Extended) explain in detail how xerophytes are adapted to dry conditions and hydrophytes to life in water.

Objectives

  1. Describe an adaptive feature as an inherited feature that helps an organism to survive and reproduce in its environment
  2. Interpret images or other information about a species to describe its adaptive features
  3. [Supplement] Explain the adaptive features of hydrophytes and xerophytes to their environments

Lesson Note

Adaptive features connect structure to survival and lead directly into natural selection and evolution. Exam questions often show an unfamiliar organism and ask you to pick out its adaptations and say how each helps, a skill, not a memory test, so the reasoning here is what earns marks.

Lesson Evaluation

Congratulations on completing the lesson on Adaptive Features. Now that youve explored the key concepts and ideas, its time to put your knowledge to the test. This section offers a variety of practice questions designed to reinforce your understanding and help you gauge your grasp of the material.

You will encounter a mix of question types, including multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, and essay questions. Each question is thoughtfully crafted to assess different aspects of your knowledge and critical thinking skills.

Use this evaluation section as an opportunity to reinforce your understanding of the topic and to identify any areas where you may need additional study. Don't be discouraged by any challenges you encounter; instead, view them as opportunities for growth and improvement.
