Booking Systems

Overview

Two people, in different countries, both click to buy the very last seat at a sold-out concert at exactly the same moment. Only one ticket exists. Who gets it, and how does the system make sure the other person is not also charged for a seat that is gone? Online booking systems solve this problem millions of times a day, for flights, films, concerts and matches, by updating a central record the instant a seat is taken.

This lesson explains how an online booking system works, why immediate updates are the key to preventing double-booking, and where these systems are used. You will weigh their advantages, such as instant confirmation and round-the-clock booking, against their disadvantages, such as the loss of personal service and total reliance on the system being online, the balanced view the exam expects.

Objectives

  1. Online booking systems.
  2. Characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of online booking systems including travel industry, concerts, cinemas, sporting events.

Lesson Note

Booking systems are one of the most familiar uses of ICT, and they raise a problem unique to shared resources: the same seat must never be sold twice. Understanding how a booking system avoids this, and being able to give a balanced account of its advantages and disadvantages, is a key ICT applications skill.
