Gas Exchange

Overview

Every cell in your body needs a constant supply of oxygen to release energy from glucose, and every cell produces carbon dioxide as a waste product. The lungs are where this vital swap happens: oxygen flows into the blood while carbon dioxide flows out, driven entirely by diffusion.

In this lesson you will learn the structure of the thorax, how the intercostal muscles and diaphragm drive ventilation, and how the alveoli are perfectly adapted to make gas exchange as fast as possible. These concepts are tested across Papers 1 and 2 and link directly to respiration and transport.

Objectives

  1. Describe the structure of the thorax, including the ribs, intercostal muscles, diaphragm, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli and pleural membranes
  2. Understand the role of the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm in ventilation
  3. Explain how alveoli are adapted for gas exchange by diffusion between air in the lungs and blood in capillaries

Lesson Note

You breathe roughly 20 000 times a day without thinking about it. Each breath pulls fresh air into roughly 300 million tiny air sacs called alveoli, where oxygen passes into the blood and carbon dioxide passes out. The system that makes this happen is beautifully engineered: muscular walls that change pressure, branching airways that distribute air evenly, and exchange surfaces so thin that gases cross them in a fraction of a second.
