Training

Overview

A finance director looks at a proposal to spend money training the warehouse team and says the sentence every training manager has heard: what if we train them and they leave? The right reply is a question. What if we do not train them and they stay? A business that will not spend on skills is not saving money, it is choosing to be run for the next ten years by people who only know what they knew on their first day.

This lesson works out which of those two directors is right, and when. You will learn the three types of training the specification names and what each one is actually for, weigh the costs of training against the benefits it names, and see why the choice between training on the job and off it is genuinely different for a restaurant, a hospital and a software company. You will also meet one of the only three State questions on four whole papers, and it is on this topic, so it is worth knowing exactly what a two-mark answer here looks like.

Objectives

  1. Importance of training the workforce.
  2. Types of training undertaken by businesses.

Lesson Note

The finance director's question is a real one and it deserves a real answer rather than the slogan. Training does raise the market value of an employee, and some of the people a business trains will take that value somewhere else. What the question leaves out is that the alternative is not a workforce that stays and costs less. It is a workforce that stays and cannot use the new machine, cannot answer the customer's question and cannot be promoted into the supervisor's job when the supervisor retires.
