Recognition Systems

Overview

Every time a car park barrier lifts on its own, a register is marked without a teacher tapping a keyboard, a passport gate reads a chip from across the desk, or a phone is unlocked by a glance, a recognition system has quietly turned something physical, a mark, a character, a tag, a face, into data a computer can act on. These systems remove the slow, error-prone step of a human typing data in.

This lesson sorts out the main recognition technologies the syllabus names: OMR, OCR, RFID, NFC and biometrics. For each you will learn what it captures, how it recognises the data, where it is used, and its honest advantages and disadvantages. By the end you will be able to pick the right technology for a situation, from marking exam papers to tracking livestock, and justify the choice the way an examiner expects.

Lesson Note

Keying data in by hand is slow and full of mistakes. Recognition systems let a machine read the data directly, so a thousand exam papers, a warehouse of stock or a queue of cars can be processed quickly and accurately. Cambridge expects you to know each named technology, the device it uses, and the trade-offs, because exam questions usually ask you to choose between two of them and justify your choice.
