Selective Breeding

Overview

Long before scientists understood DNA, farmers and breeders were shaping the plants and animals around them. By choosing individuals with the best traits and breeding them together, generation after generation, humans have transformed wild grasses into high-yielding wheat and wolves into hundreds of dog breeds.

In this lesson you will learn how selective breeding works in both plants and animals, examine real examples of the process, and consider the risks that come with narrowing a population's gene pool.

Lesson Note

Every ear of sweetcorn, every dairy cow, and every pet dog exists because humans deliberately chose which organisms got to reproduce. Selective breeding (also called artificial selection) is one of the oldest technologies, predating written language by thousands of years. Understanding the process explains not only why modern crops and livestock look nothing like their wild ancestors, but also why narrowing genetic diversity carries real risks.
