Physics: Solids, Liquids And Gases: Units

Overview

Solids, liquids and gases are described by quantities that most other physics topics never touch: volume in cubic metres, pressure in pascals, and temperature on two different scales at once. Getting those units right is half the battle in this section.

In this lesson you will meet each unit used in solids, liquids and gases, see how the derived ones are built from the base units, practise the awkward conversions for area and volume, and learn to use units as a check that your working is sound.

Objectives

  1. Use the following units: degree Celsius, Kelvin (K), joule (J), kilogram (kg), metre (m), metre2, metre3, metre/second (m/s), metre/second2 (m/s2), newton (N) and pascal (Pa)

Lesson Note

A gas cylinder label might read 200 bar, a weather report might give 1013 millibars, and a physics question will expect pascals. A kettle boils at 100 degrees Celsius, but a gas law calculation will only work in kelvin. This section of the course leans on units more heavily than almost any other, because the same physical quantity is quoted in several different ways in everyday life. Learning the standard units, and how to convert into them, makes every later calculation in the topic straightforward.
