Populations Grow And Decline

Overview

It took all of human history until around 1800 for the world to reach one billion people. The next billion took just over a century; recent billions have taken little more than a decade each. Yet in some countries today the population is actually shrinking. What drives a nation's numbers up or down, and can governments steer them?

This lesson teaches the engine of population change: birth rate, death rate, natural increase and migration. You will master the Demographic Transition Model, the single most important diagram in population geography, and weigh real policies that tried to raise or lower birth rates in France and China.

Objectives

  1. Patterns and trends in global population growth.
  2. Reasons for the growth and decline of a country’s population: fertility rate, birth rate, death rate, natural increase, migration.
  3. An evaluation of the impacts of pro-natalist and anti-natalist policies on birth rates.
  4. The demographic transition model (DTM) and its strengths and limitations.

Lesson Note

Population growth shapes everything from food supply to housing, jobs and the environment. Examiners want you to handle the key rates with confidence, use the Demographic Transition Model to explain change, and evaluate the policies governments use to influence birth rates. Get the vocabulary exact and the calculations will follow.
