Food Production

Overview

Feeding a growing global population means producing more food from the same amount of land. Biologists and farmers work together to push crop yields higher using controlled environments like glasshouses, while microorganisms such as yeast turn simple ingredients into bread, beer, and other staples.

In this lesson you will explore how glasshouses and polythene tunnels boost crop growth by controlling temperature and carbon dioxide, and discover how yeast's anaerobic respiration is harnessed to make bread. You will also learn how to investigate yeast activity under different conditions.

Objectives

  1. Describe how glasshouses and polythene tunnels can be used to increase the yield of certain crops
  2. Understand the effects on crop yield of increased carbon dioxide and increased temperature in glasshouses
  3. Understand the role of yeast in the production of food including bread
  4. Investigate the role of anaerobic respiration by yeast in different conditions

Lesson Note

The world's population passed eight billion in 2022, and demand for food keeps rising. Two biological strategies help farmers increase the amount of food they can grow: controlling the physical environment around crops, and using microorganisms to process raw ingredients into useful food products.
