Construction is the art of drawing accurate geometric figures using only a ruler, a pair of compasses and a protractor. Unlike a rough sketch, every length must be measured to the nearest millimetre and every angle to the nearest degree. Exam questions test both the accuracy of your drawing and your understanding of the method behind it.
You will learn how to construct triangles from given information (SSS, SAS and ASA), how to use scale drawings to solve real-world distance and bearing problems, and how to construct perpendicular bisectors and angle bisectors using compasses alone. These compass-and-straight-edge constructions are among the oldest techniques in mathematics, dating back over 2000 years to Euclid.
