Construction

Overview

Construction is the art of drawing accurate geometric figures using only a ruler, a pair of compasses and a protractor. Unlike a rough sketch, every length must be measured to the nearest millimetre and every angle to the nearest degree. Exam questions test both the accuracy of your drawing and your understanding of the method behind it.

You will learn how to construct triangles from given information (SSS, SAS and ASA), how to use scale drawings to solve real-world distance and bearing problems, and how to construct perpendicular bisectors and angle bisectors using compasses alone. These compass-and-straight-edge constructions are among the oldest techniques in mathematics, dating back over 2000 years to Euclid.

Objectives

  1. Measure and draw lines to the nearest millimetre
  2. Construct triangles and other two-dimensional shapes using a combination of a ruler, a protractor and compasses
  3. Solve problems using scale drawings
  4. Use straight edge and compasses to construct the perpendicular bisector of a line segment and the bisector of an angle

Lesson Note

Architects draft floor plans. Surveyors map coastlines. Navigators plot courses across oceans. All of these tasks start the same way: with a carefully measured line drawn on paper. The tools are simple, a ruler, compasses and a protractor, but the skill lies in using them accurately. In this topic you will master that skill.

Lesson Evaluation

Congratulations on completing the lesson on Construction. Now that youve explored the key concepts and ideas, its time to put your knowledge to the test. This section offers a variety of practice questions designed to reinforce your understanding and help you gauge your grasp of the material.

You will encounter a mix of question types, including multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, and essay questions. Each question is thoughtfully crafted to assess different aspects of your knowledge and critical thinking skills.

Use this evaluation section as an opportunity to reinforce your understanding of the topic and to identify any areas where you may need additional study. Don't be discouraged by any challenges you encounter; instead, view them as opportunities for growth and improvement.

  1. To construct a triangle given three side lengths, the correct method is: A) SSS using ruler and compasses B) ASA using ruler and protractor C) SAS using ruler and protractor D) Draw freehand and label the sides Answer: A
  2. A map scale is 1 : 25 000. A distance of 3 cm on the map represents a real distance of: A) 75 m B) 750 m C) 7 500 m D) 75 000 m Answer: B
  3. The perpendicular bisector of a line segment: A) Passes through one end at 90 degrees B) Passes through the midpoint at 90 degrees C) Passes through the midpoint at 45 degrees D) Divides the segment into two unequal parts Answer: B
  4. When constructing an angle bisector, you should: A) Use a protractor to measure half the angle B) Draw equal arcs from the crossing points on both arms C) Draw a line parallel to one arm D) Measure the angle and divide by two on a calculator Answer: B
  5. A plan is drawn at a scale of 1 : 200. A wall that is 8 m long in real life will be drawn as: A) 0.4 cm B) 4 cm C) 40 cm D) 400 cm Answer: B
