Mensuration Of 2D Shapes

Overview

Mensuration is the branch of mathematics concerned with measuring lengths, areas and volumes. In two dimensions you need to find perimeters (the distance around a shape) and areas (the space inside a shape) for triangles, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezia, circles, semicircles and compound shapes built from these.

This topic also requires you to convert fluently between metric units for both length and area. Higher-tier students extend circle work to arc lengths and sector areas. These skills appear across both papers and connect directly to 3D mensuration and trigonometry.

Objectives

  1. Convert measurements within the metric system to include linear and area units
  2. Find the perimeter of shapes made from triangles and rectangles
  3. Find the area of simple shapes using the formulae for the areas of triangles and rectangles
  4. Find the area of parallelograms and trapezia
  5. Find circumferences and areas of circles using relevant formulae; find perimeters and areas of semicircles
  6. [Higher] Find perimeters and areas of sectors of circles
