Light And Sound

Overview

Light and sound are two of the most familiar waves, yet they behave in fundamentally different ways. Light is a transverse electromagnetic wave that can travel through a vacuum; sound is a longitudinal mechanical wave that needs a medium.

In this lesson you will learn the law of reflection, Snell's law of refraction, how to draw ray diagrams, what total internal reflection is and why it matters for optical fibres, the meaning of critical angle, and the basic properties of sound waves.

Objectives

  1. Know that light waves are transverse waves and that they can be reflected and refracted
  2. Use the law of reflection
  3. Draw ray diagrams to illustrate reflection and refraction
  4. Investigate the refraction of light using rectangular blocks, semi-circular blocks and triangular prisms
  5. Know and use the relationship between refractive index, angle of incidence and angle of refraction
  6. Investigate the refractive index of glass using a glass block
  7. Describe the role of total internal reflection in transmitting information along optical fibres and in prisms
  8. Explain the meaning of critical angle
  9. Know and use the relationship between critical angle and refractive index
  10. Know that sound waves are longitudinal waves which can be reflected and refracted

Lesson Note

Every mirror, every lens, every pair of glasses and every fibre-optic cable relies on the same two phenomena: reflection and refraction. Once you can predict how a ray of light changes direction at a boundary, you can explain everything from a rainbow to a submarine's periscope.
