Overview

A vaccinated population can stop a disease from spreading even among the small number of people who were never vaccinated themselves. That single fact, herd immunity, rests entirely on how the immune system recognises a pathogen and remembers it, and it is one of the most consequential ideas in public health.

This lesson explains how antibodies recognise antigens, how vaccines create immunity without causing disease, the difference between active and passive, natural and artificial immunity, how antibiotics work and why resistant strains such as MRSA are a growing concern, and how sewage treatment protects public health by relying on the very microorganisms that can also cause disease.

Objectives

Lesson Note

Fighting disease is not only a matter of the individual immune response inside one body. The same biology, how antibodies recognise antigens and how vaccines create lasting protection, scales up to protect whole populations, and public sanitation systems use microorganisms deliberately to stop disease spreading in the first place.
