Operating Systems

Overview

Every time you tap an icon, type a command or simply ask a smart speaker a question, you are talking to an operating system. It is the software working quietly in the background that manages the hardware, runs your programs, handles errors and keeps the whole machine secure. Without it, a computer would be almost impossible for an ordinary person to use.

In this lesson you will learn what an operating system does and, in particular, the four ways it can let a human communicate with a computer: the command line interface, the graphical user interface, and the newer dialogue-based and gesture-based interfaces. You will compare their strengths and weaknesses and learn to match the right interface to the right user, exactly the kind of judgement ICT exams reward.

Objectives

  1. Operating systems.
  2. Characteristics of operating systems including: Command Line Interface (CLI), Graphical User Interface (GUI), dialogue based and gesture based interface Differences between types of operating systems Advantages and disadvantages of the different types of operating systems.

Lesson Note

Interfaces are everywhere, and exam questions on them are common. You will be asked to describe each type, compare them, and decide which suits a given user. The skill is not just listing features but weighing trade-offs: speed against ease of use, power against safety. Get comfortable with that kind of balanced judgement here and you will use it throughout ICT.
