Responses To Climate Change

Overview

Faced with a warming world, countries have two broad choices: reduce the warming itself, or learn to live with its effects. Build a wind farm and you cut emissions; build a sea wall and you hold back the rising tide. One tackles the cause, the other the symptom, and the smartest strategies use both.

This lesson explains mitigation and adaptation, weighs the strengths and weaknesses of each, looks at international agreements such as the Paris Agreement, and then studies one country in detail: the Maldives, a nation of low lying islands fighting to stay above the sea.

Objectives

  1. The strategies (including national and international agreements) and techniques used to manage the impacts of climate change.
  2. An evaluation of mitigation (including international agreements) and adaptation strategies and techniques used to manage the impacts of climate change.
  3. One detailed specific example of a named country or region to include: • the impacts of climate change • the responses to climate change • the strategies and techniques being used to manage climate change; including sustainable.

Lesson Note

The response section is where examiners ask you to evaluate, not just describe. You need the two key strategies (mitigation and adaptation), examples of each, the role of international agreements, and a judgement about how well they work. A named country case study, the Maldives, anchors all of this in a real place.
