Radioactivity Continued
Overview
The same radiation that lets doctors image a tumour or sterilise equipment can also damage living cells if it is not handled with care. Ionising radiation knocks electrons from atoms inside the body, harming cells, so working safely with radioactive sources is as important as knowing what they can do.
In this lesson you will state the effects of ionising nuclear radiation on living things, describe how radioactive materials are moved, used and stored safely, and explain the three core safety precautions: reducing the time of exposure, increasing the distance from the source, and using shielding to absorb the radiation.
