Formal Elements And Materials

Overview

A drawing has one view. A three-dimensional object has an infinite number of them, and it also has weight, temperature, a surface someone will touch and a material that will do what its nature dictates whether you planned for it or not. Wood moves with humidity. Clay shrinks as it dries and again as it fires. Metal work hardens under the hammer. Designing in three dimensions means designing with those behaviours rather than against them.

This note covers the elements the specification names for this endorsement, which are light, space, form, scale and proportion, and then the four material characteristics it names, which are resistance, malleability, recyclability and sustainability. You will work through mass and void, how a form reads from several angles, human scale and ergonomics, joints, surface finish, and the drawing and modelling methods that let you test an object before you commit material to it.

Objectives

  1. Develop practical knowledge and understanding of the use of formal elements and visual communication through a variety of approaches
  2. Develop the use of observational skill to record from sources and communicate ideas
  3. Understand characteristics of materials such as resistance, malleability, recyclability and sustainability
  4. Understand the elements of three-dimensional design such as light, space, form, scale and proportion
  5. Understand the effects and creative potential of combining and manipulating different two-dimensional and three-dimensional materials and media
  6. Develop the use of digital and/or non-digital applications

Lesson Note

Three-dimensional Design is described in the specification as the designing, prototyping, modelling and making of functional and aesthetic products, interiors and architecture, using maquettes, models and working drawings to take an idea to realisation. Two words in that sentence do a lot of work. Functional means the object has a job, so it can fail in ways a painting cannot. Modelling means the design is expected to exist in rough physical form long before it exists in its final material.
