Cell Structure

Overview

Every living organism is built from cells, yet most cells are far too small to see with the naked eye. Under a microscope, however, each cell reveals a busy interior packed with specialised structures, each with its own job to do.

In this lesson you will learn to identify and describe the key structures found inside animal and plant cells, explain the function of each organelle, and compare the two cell types. These are core specification points tested across both Paper 1 and Paper 2.

Objectives

  1. Describe cell structures, including the nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, mitochondria, chloroplasts and vacuole
  2. Describe the functions of the nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, mitochondria, chloroplasts and vacuole
  3. Know the similarities and differences in the structure of plant and animal cells

Lesson Note

Robert Hooke first saw cells in 1665 when he sliced a thin piece of cork and peered at it through an early microscope. What he saw were tiny box-like compartments - he called them 'cells' because they reminded him of monks' rooms in a monastery. Today we know that every living organism is made of one or more cells, and that each cell contains a set of structures that keep it alive. Understanding those structures is the starting point for almost every topic in biology.
