Network Issues And Communication

Overview

The moment data leaves your device and travels across a network, it becomes a target. Passwords can be guessed, messages can be intercepted and viruses can ride along with an innocent-looking download. Keeping data private and confidential during transfer, and proving that the person at the keyboard really is who they claim to be, are among the most important everyday jobs in computing, and they are tested in almost every ICT paper.

In this lesson you will learn what makes a password strong, and meet the modern alternatives to passwords: zero login, biometrics, magnetic stripe cards, smart cards, and physical and electronic tokens. You will see how anti-malware software finds and quarantines viruses, and how people meet across distances using video, audio and web conferencing, along with the hardware, software and connection each one needs. By the end you will be able to recommend sensible security measures and compare the three kinds of electronic conference.

Objectives

  1. Security issues regarding data transfer.
  2. Privacy and confidentiality of data transfer.
  3. Passwords.
  4. Avoiding password interception by using up to date anti-spyware and regularly changing passwords The differences between strong and weak passwords.
  5. Other authentication methods.
  6. Including: zero login, biometric methods, magnetic stripes, smart cards, physical tokens, electronic tokens.
  7. Anti-malware software.
  8. Including the use of anti-malware and anti-virus software The operation of removing/quarantining viruses using up to date software Scanning the storage media used to transfer data Scanning the data/software when downloading.
  9. Electronic conferencing.
  10. Characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of video-conferencing, audio-conferencing, web-conferencing The hardware, software and network connection required to set up each type of electronic conference.

Lesson Note

Whenever you log into email, bank online or join a video call, you are relying on data being transferred securely and on the system trusting that you are really you. Weak security has real costs: stolen money, leaked private messages, devices crippled by malware. Examiners ask you to judge whether a password is strong, choose an authentication method and weigh the advantages and disadvantages of meeting online, so the reasoning in this topic turns directly into marks and into safer habits.
