Respiration

Overview

Every living cell needs a constant supply of energy to stay alive. Whether a cell is contracting a muscle fibre, building a protein, or simply keeping its membrane intact, the energy comes from the same source: a molecule called ATP, produced by the chemical process of respiration.

In this lesson you will learn how aerobic and anaerobic respiration release energy from glucose, why anaerobic respiration produces far less ATP, and what happens to the waste products. These ideas are central to Papers 1 and 2 and connect directly to topics like gas exchange, transport, and exercise physiology.

Lesson Note

You might think food gives you energy directly, but the reality is more indirect. The glucose from your food is broken down inside your cells through a series of chemical reactions called respiration. These reactions produce a molecule called ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is the universal energy currency of living cells.
