Set Language And Notation

Overview

Sets give you a precise language for grouping objects that share a common property, whether they are numbers, letters or real-world items. The notation you learn here appears throughout probability, number theory and logic, making it one of the most versatile tools in your IGCSE toolkit.

You will master curly-brace notation, the symbols for union, intersection and complement, and learn to organise information inside Venn diagrams so that multi-part exam questions become straightforward sorting exercises.

Objectives

  1. Understand the definition of a set
  2. Use the set notation union, intersection, element of, and not element of
  3. Understand the concept of the universal set and the empty set and the symbols for these sets
  4. Understand and use the complement of a set
  5. Use Venn diagrams to represent sets
  6. [Higher] Understand sets defined in algebraic terms, and understand and use subsets
  7. [Higher] Use Venn diagrams to represent sets and the number of elements in sets
  8. [Higher] Use the notation n(A) for the number of elements in the set A
  9. [Higher] Use sets in practical situations

Lesson Note

Imagine sorting a music library by genre, filtering search results by date, or listing every student who studies both French and Spanish. Each of these tasks creates a well-defined collection of objects. Mathematics calls such a collection a set, and gives you a compact notation for describing exactly what is in it, what is not, and how two sets overlap.
