Theme One: Identity And Culture

Overview

Theme one is the theme you already know everything about. It covers your family, your friends, and what you do on a Saturday. Nobody has to teach you the content. What has to be taught is the English that turns it into a mark: the words for a relationship that is not simply good, the tenses that let you say what you used to do as well as what you do now, and the difference between mentioning a festival and describing one.

This lesson goes through the two topics the specification names under theme one, with the sub-topics shown as bullet points under each, and builds the language for them. You will see a photograph description marked against the criteria the specification prints for that task, a listing exercise of the kind the Reading section uses, and one opinion written at three different standards so that you can see exactly what separates them.

Objectives

  1. Theme one covers the following two topics with related sub-topics shown as bullet points: Topic 1: Me, my family, friends and people I know
  2. Relationships with family
  3. Relationships with friends and people I know Topic 2: Free-time activities
  4. Music
  5. Cinema and TV
  6. Sport
  7. Customs and festivals

Lesson Note

Theme one covers the following two topics, with related sub-topics shown as bullet points: Me, my family, friends and people I know; and Free-time activities. It is the first theme in the specification and it is also the one candidates most often assume needs no work, because there is no information in it that anyone could get wrong.
