Radian Measure

Overview

Degrees are familiar, but they are an arbitrary choice. Radians connect the angle at the centre of a circle directly to the arc it cuts, giving every formula in trigonometry and calculus a cleaner, more natural form. Mastering radians is the gateway to the rest of the 4PM1 trigonometry and calculus units.

In this topic you will learn what a radian is, convert fluently between degrees and radians, and apply the two key circle formulae for arc length and sector area. You will also find the area of a segment by combining the sector formula with the triangle area formula, a technique that appears regularly on both papers.

Lesson Note

Every circle has the same shape, so the ratio of arc length to radius depends only on the angle. That ratio is what we call a radian. Unlike degrees, which split a full turn into 360 arbitrary slices, radians arise from the geometry itself, making them the preferred unit throughout higher mathematics and physics.
