Introduction To Algebra

Overview

Algebra is the moment mathematics learns to talk about any number at once. By letting a letter stand for an unknown or a changing value, you can write a rule that works for every case, not just one. It is the language the rest of the subject is written in.

In this lesson you will see how letters represent generalised numbers, and practise substituting values into expressions and formulas. These two ideas open the door to equations, graphs and almost everything ahead.

Lesson Note

Once you can write a relationship with letters, one formula replaces endless separate calculations. Substitution then lets you use that formula for any values you are given.
