Overview

A photograph dropped into a report can lift it from plain to professional, or it can wreck the layout with a stretched, blurry, out of place picture. The difference is rarely the camera. It is whether you know how to place an image where it belongs, size it without squashing it, trim away what you do not need and tune its appearance so it serves the document. These are the everyday image skills that separate confident document production from guesswork.

In this lesson you will learn how to place an image with precision, resize it while keeping its aspect ratio or deliberately changing it, crop, rotate and reflect it, adjust its brightness and contrast, group and layer several images into one, and shrink a file that is too large to share. Every one of these is examined in the Cambridge practical papers, where the marks go to the candidate who follows the instruction exactly and keeps the picture undistorted.

Lesson Note

In the Cambridge practical papers you are not asked to be a graphic artist. You are asked to follow a precise instruction: place this image here, make it this size, crop this much off it, flip it so it faces the text. The examiner is checking that you can control an image rather than just insert it. Almost every document or presentation task involves at least one picture, so a sure command of these tools protects marks across the whole paper and produces work that looks deliberate rather than accidental.
