Chemical Tests

Overview

How do you prove that the gas bubbling out of a reaction is hydrogen and not carbon dioxide? How can you tell whether a white powder contains copper ions or iron ions? Chemical tests give you a definitive answer, and the Edexcel specification requires you to know a precise toolkit of tests for gases, cations and anions.

In this lesson you will learn how to identify five common gases, carry out flame tests for metal cations, detect specific ions using reagents, and confirm whether a liquid is pure water. These tests appear regularly on both papers.

Objectives

  1. describe tests for these gases: - hydrogen - oxygen - carbon dioxide - ammonia - chlorine.
  2. describe how to carry out a flame test
  3. know the colours formed in flame tests for these cations:
  4. 2.48 - Li+ is red - Na+ is yellow - K+ is lilac - Ca2+ is orange-red - Cu2+ is blue-green. describe tests for these cations: - NH4+ using sodium hydroxide solution and identifying the gas evolved - Cu2+, Fe2+ and Fe3+ using sodium hydroxide solution. describe tests for these anions: - Cl-, Br- and I- using acidified silver nitrate solution - SO42- using acidified barium chloride solution - CO32- using hydrochloric acid and identifying the gas evolved.
  5. describe a test for the presence of water using anhydrous copper(II) sulfate
  6. describe a physical test to show whether a sample of water is pure

Lesson Note

Chemistry is not just about making new substances; it is also about identifying what is already there. Qualitative analysis uses a set of standard tests to determine which ions or gases are present in an unknown sample. Each test relies on a characteristic observation: a colour change, a pop, a relighting splint, or a precipitate.
