Database Management

Overview

Every organisation collects data, but collecting it is only half the story. A database turns a heap of records into something you can search, sort, validate and report on in seconds. Understanding how databases are structured and queried is a core skill tested across both papers of the Edexcel IGCSE ICT course.

In this lesson you will learn the building blocks of a database, from fields and records to primary keys and relationships. You will explore the five data types Edexcel expects you to recognise, apply validation rules to catch errors at the point of entry, build queries using relational and logical operators, and produce polished outputs including reports and mail-merge documents.

Objectives

  1. Identify data types: alphanumeric/text, numeric/number, date, currency, logical/Boolean
  2. Explain the structure of a given database, including record, field, table, primary key/field, foreign key/field, relationships between tables
  3. Explain the need for validation and identify validation checks such as range check, presence check, type check, length check
  4. Sort using a single field, multiple fields, ascending/descending order
  5. Input information to given tables or forms applying format consistently
  6. Use search/query using single criterion, multiple criteria, search within results, relational operators, logical operators
  7. Produce outputs: reports, mail merge documents, specified fields, design view (table structure, searches/queries, forms, relationships), data view (table, search/query results, forms)

Lesson Note

A school keeps thousands of student records. A hospital tracks patients, appointments and prescriptions. An online retailer logs every order, payment and delivery. Without a structured way to store and retrieve this data, even a small organisation would grind to a halt. That structured way is a database, and learning to design, populate and query one is a practical skill you will use well beyond the exam hall.

Lesson Evaluation

Congratulations on completing the lesson on Database Management. Now that youve explored the key concepts and ideas, its time to put your knowledge to the test. This section offers a variety of practice questions designed to reinforce your understanding and help you gauge your grasp of the material.

You will encounter a mix of question types, including multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, and essay questions. Each question is thoughtfully crafted to assess different aspects of your knowledge and critical thinking skills.

Use this evaluation section as an opportunity to reinforce your understanding of the topic and to identify any areas where you may need additional study. Don't be discouraged by any challenges you encounter; instead, view them as opportunities for growth and improvement.
