Overview

Design a poster for the school arts festival. That is a brief, and it is almost entirely made of holes. It does not say who will read the poster, where it will hang, how far away they will be standing, whether they are already coming or need persuading, how many colours you can afford to print, or what the poster has to make somebody do. Every one of those holes is a research question, and answering them is where a graphic designer's work actually begins.

In Graphic Communication, research and development is not a mood board glued in before the real designing starts. It is the interrogation of a brief, the evidence you gather about an audience, forty thumbnails made in twenty minutes, a typeface tested at the size it will really be seen, and a folded paper mock-up that reveals the crease falls straight through the logo. This note follows one project from a vague sentence to a resolved outcome, and shows what has to be left on the sheet at each stage.

Objectives

  1. Undertake visual research, using primary and secondary sources, and record observations, experiences and ideas in appropriate ways, including first-hand experience of original work
  2. Develop and realise ideas and outcomes, exploring and reviewing possible solutions and modifying work appropriately
  3. Understand and use (appropriately and safely) a range of materials, equipment, processes and techniques in two- and/or three dimensions, using information and communication technology where appropriate
  4. Know and understand a range of work, from contemporary practice, past practice and different cultures, in order to demonstrate an understanding of continuity and change in art, craft and design

Lesson Note

Graphic communication differs from most of the other endorsements in one important way: your work has a job to do for somebody else. A painting can succeed by being interesting. A wayfinding sign fails if a stranger walks the wrong way, no matter how elegant it is. That is why development in this subject begins by turning the brief into questions, and why the answers to those questions are themselves evidence a examiner can credit.
