General Principles Of Land Use
Overview
Land is the one thing a farmer cannot make more of. The same hectare could grow maize, carry cattle, hold a fish pond or be left as forest, and the choice decides whether the soil stays fertile or wears out, and whether the farm feeds a family or a market. Getting land use right is the first and biggest decision in farming.
In this lesson you will learn the main ways land is used, from rotations and mixed farming to monoculture, forestry and aquaculture. You will see how slope, rainfall, temperature and soil quietly limit what any field can do, and why a growing population forces farmers to plan carefully and squeeze more from every hectare without ruining it.
Objectives
- (a) describe different forms of land use, including different agricultural systems and farming practices (rotations, mixed farming and monoculture), forestry and aquaculture.
- (b) describe and explain the ways in which the uses of land in different areas may be limited by topographical, climatic and other environmental factors.
- (c) understand that population growth leads to a need for efficient use of land and farm planning.
