Food Production

Overview

Almost everything you eat depends on farming techniques that push biological processes to their limits. From glasshouses that trap warmth and carbon dioxide to microorganisms that transform flour into bread and milk into yoghurt, food production sits at the intersection of ecology, biochemistry and engineering.

In this lesson you will explore how farmers manipulate growing conditions to maximise crop yield, weigh the trade-offs between chemical pesticides and biological control, and discover how yeast and bacteria are harnessed in industrial fermenters to produce everyday foods at scale.

Objectives

  1. Describe how glasshouses and polythene tunnels can be used to increase the yield of certain crops

Lesson Note

A single hectare of land can feed far more people today than it could a century ago. The difference is not luck; it is applied biology. Farmers control temperature, light, carbon dioxide, nutrients and pests so that crop plants photosynthesise faster and lose less of their yield to competitors and disease. Meanwhile, microorganisms like yeast and Lactobacillus quietly do the chemistry that turns raw ingredients into bread and yoghurt.
