Copyright

Overview

Writing a piece of software can take a team months or years of skilled work. Copying it takes a few seconds. Copyright law exists to make sure the people who create software, like the people who write music or books, are rewarded for their effort and can decide how their work is used. Without it, there would be little reason to invest in making good software at all.

This lesson explains why copyright legislation is needed, what counts as breaking it (including software piracy), and the practical methods producers use to protect their work, from product keys and licence agreements to holograms and dongles. You will be able to define the key terms, list what is illegal, and describe how producers fight piracy the way an examiner expects.

Objectives

  1. Copyright.
  2. The need for copyright legislation and the principles of copyright relating to computer software (e.g. software piracy) The methods that software producers employ to prevent software copyright legislation being broken.

Lesson Note

Software is intellectual property, just like a song or a novel, and the law protects it in the same way. Cambridge expects you to explain why copyright legislation is needed, to define software piracy and copyright infringement, and to describe the methods producers use to prevent illegal copying. These are precise terms with precise meanings, so accurate definitions earn the marks.
