Laws Of Logarithms

Overview

Logarithms turn multiplication into addition and powers into multiplication, which is exactly what once made them the engine of hand calculation. Today their laws are the key to solving exponential equations and to handling any quantity that grows or shrinks by repeated factors.

In this lesson you will learn the three core laws of logarithms, the product, quotient and power laws, plus the change-of-base formula. You will use them to combine, split and simplify logarithmic expressions, the essential groundwork for the exponential equations that follow.

Objectives

  1. Know and use the laws of logarithms, including the change of base of logarithms.

Lesson Note

Logarithms are the natural language of anything that changes by a multiplying factor: sound levels, earthquake magnitudes, pH, compound growth. Their laws let you rewrite awkward products and powers as simple sums, which is the step that makes exponential equations solvable.
