Differences In Economic Development Between Countries

Overview

Why is the average person in one country far richer, healthier and better educated than in another? Countries sit at very different stages of economic development, and the gaps are wide. The reasons are not random; they follow patterns economists can identify.

In this lesson you will explore the main differences between more and less developed countries: in income and productivity, population growth, the balance of farming, industry and services, saving and investment, and the quality of education, healthcare and natural resources. Understanding these differences explains why development varies and how it might be raised.

Objectives

  1. differences in: - income - productivity - population growth - size of primary, secondary and tertiary sectors - saving and investment - education - healthcare - natural resources

Lesson Note

Understanding why countries differ in development is the foundation of development economics and of policies to reduce poverty. The differences are linked, so being able to explain how one feeds another, for example low saving leading to low investment leading to low productivity, is exactly the chain of analysis examiners reward.
