Accuracy: Grammar, Spelling And Punctuation

Overview

Accuracy is the quiet half of a good language mark. Even with strong ideas, a wide vocabulary and varied sentences, frequent slips in grammar, spelling and punctuation slow the reader down and pull the mark back. The good news is that most errors that cost ESL candidates marks are a small, predictable set, which means they can be learned and checked for.

This lesson names the errors examiners penalise most often, shows how to spot and correct them, and gives you a quick proofreading routine for the end of the exam. You will compare an error-filled paragraph with a corrected one and see how clean, controlled writing reaches the higher bands.

Objectives

  1. Write with control of grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  2. Recognise and correct the errors most often penalised by examiners.
  3. Proofread a response to remove slips before the end of the exam.

Lesson Note

The language mark for the writing tasks rewards accuracy alongside range. The top band describes a high level of accuracy where any occasional errors do not get in the way of communication; the lower bands describe errors that impede communication. The key idea is that errors matter most when they make the reader stop and work out what you meant. A few minor slips in an otherwise clear answer do little harm; frequent errors that block understanding do a great deal. The aim is control: clear, correct writing that the reader never has to untangle.
