Percentages, Interest And Profit

Overview

Percentages are the language money speaks. A discount in a sale, the interest on a loan, a profit on a sale, the tax on a receipt: all of them are percentages, and being quick with them is one of the most useful everyday skills mathematics gives you.

In this lesson you will find percentages of quantities, handle percentage increase and decrease, and tackle the two ideas examiners love: the difference between simple and compound interest, and profit and loss as percentages. Master these and a whole class of exam questions becomes routine.

Objectives

  1. Calculate percentages of quantities, percentage increase and decrease, simple and compound interest, and profit and loss.

Lesson Note

Every price drop, bank statement and business report uses percentages. Because a percentage is a number out of 100, it lets you compare things fairly even when the totals differ. Getting fluent here pays off across the whole syllabus and far beyond the exam, in any decision involving money.
