Introduction To Probability

Overview

Probability is the mathematics of chance. Every time you toss a coin, roll a die, draw a card or check tomorrow's weather forecast, you are dealing with uncertainty, and probability gives you a precise way to measure how likely something is. Instead of vague words like likely or unlikely, it puts a number between 0 and 1 on every event.

In this lesson you will meet the probability scale, learn the simple formula that turns counting into probability, and discover the neat shortcut that the chance of something not happening is just one minus the chance that it does. These ideas are the foundation of every probability question you will ever meet, so getting them solid now pays off all the way through the course.

Objectives

  1. Understand and use the probability scale from 0 to 1.
  2. Calculate the probability of a single event.
  3. Understand that the probability of an event not occurring = 1 - the probability of the event occurring.
  4. Understand and use probability notation. (Extended only)

Lesson Note

We live in an uncertain world, and being able to measure uncertainty is a genuinely powerful skill. Insurers, doctors, weather forecasters and game designers all rely on probability to make decisions when the outcome is not certain. Once you can express a chance as a number, you can compare risks fairly, spot when a bet is unfair, and build every more advanced probability idea on a single clear foundation.
