Mitosis

Overview

You began as one cell, and now you are made of trillions, all carrying the same genetic information. The process that copies a cell exactly, again and again, is mitosis. It is how you grow, how wounds heal, how worn-out cells are replaced, and how many organisms reproduce without a partner.

In this Extended lesson you will describe mitosis as nuclear division giving identical cells, state its roles in growth, repair, replacement and asexual reproduction, explain why chromosomes are copied first, and meet stem cells, the unspecialised cells that divide to produce all the specialised cells of the body.

Objectives

  1. [Supplement] Describe mitosis as nuclear division giving rise to genetically identical cells (details of the stages of mitosis are not required)
  2. [Supplement] State the role of mitosis in growth, repair of damaged tissues, replacement of cells and asexual reproduction
  3. [Supplement] State that the exact replication of chromosomes occurs before mitosis
  4. [Supplement] State that during mitosis, the copies of chromosomes separate, maintaining the chromosome number in each daughter cell
  5. [Supplement] Describe stem cells as unspecialised cells that divide by mitosis to produce daughter cells that can become specialised for specific functions

Lesson Evaluation

Congratulations on completing the lesson on Mitosis. Now that youve explored the key concepts and ideas, its time to put your knowledge to the test. This section offers a variety of practice questions designed to reinforce your understanding and help you gauge your grasp of the material.

You will encounter a mix of question types, including multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, and essay questions. Each question is thoughtfully crafted to assess different aspects of your knowledge and critical thinking skills.

Use this evaluation section as an opportunity to reinforce your understanding of the topic and to identify any areas where you may need additional study. Don't be discouraged by any challenges you encounter; instead, view them as opportunities for growth and improvement.

  1. Mitosis produces daughter cells that are: A. genetically identical to the parent cell B. haploid C. genetically different from each other D. gametes Answer: A
  2. Which is NOT a role of mitosis? A. growth B. repair of tissues C. production of gametes D. asexual reproduction Answer: C
  3. What happens to the chromosomes just before mitosis begins? A. they are halved B. they are exactly replicated C. they break down D. they pair up and swap genes Answer: B
  4. A cell with 46 chromosomes divides by mitosis. Each daughter cell has: A. 23 chromosomes B. 46 chromosomes C. 92 chromosomes D. a random number Answer: B
  5. Stem cells are best described as: A. specialised cells that cannot divide B. unspecialised cells that divide by mitosis and can specialise C. gametes D. dead cells Answer: B
