Artificial Intelligence

Overview

From the voice assistant that answers a spoken question to the game character that seems to react to your every move, artificial intelligence is software that imitates human behaviour. But what is really going on underneath, and where is the line between a clever set of rules and a system that genuinely learns?

In this lesson you will learn what artificial intelligence means, the key characteristics that make a system count as AI, and how its core components, data, rules, the ability to reason and sometimes the ability to learn, work together. You will also meet machine learning and expert systems as two important examples.

Objectives

  1. 1 Understand what is meant by artificial intelligence (AI)
  2. 2 Describe the main characteristics of AI as the collection of data and the rules for using that data, the ability to reason, and it can include the ability to learn and adapt
  3. 3 Explain the basic operation and components of AI systems to simulate intelligent behaviour

Lesson Note

Artificial intelligence is no longer science fiction; it powers search engines, medical diagnosis tools, translation apps and game opponents. Knowing precisely what AI is, and what its characteristics and components are, lets you tell genuine learning systems from programs that merely follow fixed rules, and answer the 0478 questions that ask you to define AI and explain how it simulates intelligent behaviour.

Lesson Evaluation

Congratulations on completing the lesson on Artificial Intelligence. Now that youve explored the key concepts and ideas, its time to put your knowledge to the test. This section offers a variety of practice questions designed to reinforce your understanding and help you gauge your grasp of the material.

You will encounter a mix of question types, including multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, and essay questions. Each question is thoughtfully crafted to assess different aspects of your knowledge and critical thinking skills.

Use this evaluation section as an opportunity to reinforce your understanding of the topic and to identify any areas where you may need additional study. Don't be discouraged by any challenges you encounter; instead, view them as opportunities for growth and improvement.

  1. Artificial intelligence is best defined as the development of programs that: A. only perform calculations B. simulate human behaviour and perform human tasks C. store data permanently D. replace the operating system Answer: B
  2. Which of these is NOT always a characteristic of an AI system? A. collection of data B. a set of rules for using the data C. the ability to reason D. the ability to learn and adapt Answer: D
  3. In machine learning, supervised learning means that: A. the program learns with no data B. the user labels the data to tell the program what it means C. the program never uses training D. the rules can never change Answer: B
  4. Which component of an expert system stores the facts? A. inference engine B. user interface C. knowledge base D. rule base Answer: C
