Chemistry (9-1) - 0971 CIE

Physical And Chemical Changes

Overview

Melt an ice cube and you can freeze the water again. Burn a piece of paper and there is no getting it back. The difference between these two everyday events is the heart of one of chemistry's most useful ideas: the distinction between a physical change and a chemical change.

In this lesson you will learn to tell the two apart, using clear signs such as whether a new substance is formed and whether the change can be reversed. Getting this distinction right underpins almost everything else you will study, from changes of state to chemical reactions.

Objectives

  1. Identify physical and chemical changes, and describe the differences between them.

Lesson Note

Chemistry is the study of how matter changes. Sorting those changes into physical and chemical is the first step in describing what is really going on, whether you are boiling water, rusting iron or baking a cake. The same test, has a new substance been made, runs through the whole subject.
