Forces And Motion: Units

Overview

Physics problems fall apart when the units are wrong. A speed given in kilometres per hour cannot be plugged straight into an equation that expects metres per second, and a force stated without its unit is just a number. Knowing which unit belongs to which quantity is the first step in every calculation.

This reference covers the nine SI and derived units you need for the Forces and motion section of the Edexcel specification: kilogram, metre, metre per second, metre per second squared, newton, second, newton per kilogram, newton metre, and kilogram metre per second. You will practise recalling them quickly and converting between related forms.

Objectives

  1. Use the following units: kilogram (kg), metre (m), metre/second (m/s), metre/second2 (m/s2), newton (N), second (s) and newton/kilogram (N/kg)
  2. Use the following units: newton metre (Nm), kilogram metre/second (kg m/s)

Lesson Note

Every physical quantity has a number and a unit. Writing \(F = 12\) tells a reader nothing; writing \(F = 12\;\text{N}\) tells them the force is twelve newtons. Examiners award marks for correct units alongside correct arithmetic, so building the habit now pays off in every paper.
