Achieving Sustainable Development

Overview

It is one thing to grow richer, and quite another to do so without wrecking the planet or leaving the next generation worse off. Sustainable development is the attempt to do both at once: to raise living standards today in a way that the environment and society can keep going tomorrow. It has become the organising idea of global efforts to close the development gap.

In this lesson you will learn what sustainable development means, the social, economic and environmental strategies used to achieve it, and the main ways richer countries and organisations try to reduce uneven development through trade, aid and debt relief. You will also study one named middle or low income country in detail and judge how well its strategies have worked.

Objectives

  1. Definition(s) of sustainable development.
  2. Social, economic, and environmental strategies and techniques used to try to achieve sustainable development.
  3. An evaluation of the strategies and techniques used to try to reduce uneven development, for example, trade, international aid, and debt relief.
  4. One detailed specific example of a named country classified as an MIC or LIC, to include: • the reasons for its current level of development • the strategies and techniques used to try to raise its level of economic development, quality of life and standard of living.

Lesson Note

Sustainable development pulls the whole course together: population, settlement, resources and the development gap all meet here. The topic carries a compulsory named country case study, and 'evaluate' questions about aid, trade and debt relief are common and high value.
