Overview

Human reproduction is a chain of precisely timed events: two specialised cells fuse, a single fertilised cell divides to build an entire embryo, and a set of hormones choreographs everything from the monthly cycle that makes fertilisation possible to the process of birth itself. This lesson sets out that chain accurately and in the correct anatomical and clinical language.

You will learn the structure of the male and female reproductive systems, how meiosis produces gametes, the hormonal control of the menstrual cycle, the events of fertilisation and pregnancy, the stages of birth, patterns of human growth, and the range of contraceptive methods available, including how IVF can help couples who cannot conceive naturally.

  7. Know the roles of oestrogen and testosterone in the development of secondary sexual characteristics
  8. Describe the birth process and explain the advantages of breast feeding
  9. Describe an outline of growth and development to maturity, to include growth curves for humans
  10. Describe the methods of contraception by hormonal, barrier and natural methods, intra-uterine devices and sterilisation
  11. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of each contraceptive method
  12. Describe the process of IVF and how it can improve the chances of pregnancy

Lesson Note

Sexual reproduction combines genetic material from two parents to produce offspring that are genetically unique. In humans this depends on specialised reproductive systems, a precisely timed hormonal cycle, and a sequence of developmental stages from a single fertilised cell to a fully formed baby. Every stage is controlled by hormones acting in a coordinated sequence.
