Synthetic Polymers

Overview

The plastic bag in your hand, the window frame in your classroom, the insulation around electrical wiring - all of these are synthetic polymers, giant molecules built by joining thousands of small monomer units end to end. Polymers have transformed modern life, but their durability creates serious disposal problems.

In this lesson you will learn how addition polymers form from alkene monomers, how to draw repeat units and work backwards to find the monomer, and why disposing of polymers is an environmental challenge.

Objectives

  1. Know that an addition polymer is formed by joining up many small molecules called monomers
  2. Understand how to draw the repeat unit of the addition polymer poly(ethene)
  3. Understand how to deduce the structure of a monomer from the repeat unit of an addition polymer and vice versa
  4. Explain problems in the disposal of addition polymers, including their inertness and inability to biodegrade and the production of toxic gases when they are burned

Lesson Note

A single ethene molecule is a tiny gas that boils at -104 degrees C. Join thousands of ethene molecules together and you get poly(ethene) - a tough, flexible solid used to make carrier bags and bottles. The process that links monomers into polymers is called polymerisation, and the version you need for this specification is addition polymerisation.
