Overview

Energy is the currency of physics, and like any currency it needs a unit before the numbers mean anything. The energy section leans on eight of them, and they are not eight unrelated facts: each one is built from the others in a way that you can reconstruct rather than memorise.

This lesson sets out the kilogram, joule, metre, metre per second, metre per second squared, newton, second and watt. You will see how the joule grows out of the newton, how the watt grows out of the joule, and how tracking units through a calculation catches a wrong answer before the examiner does.

Lesson Note

A chocolate bar, a lightning strike and a lifted suitcase have nothing obvious in common, yet physics measures all three with the same unit. That is the quiet achievement of the joule: it lets you compare the energy stored in food with the energy needed to climb a staircase, and then say which is bigger. None of that works unless the units are handled properly.
