Sexually Transmitted Infections

Overview

Some infections spread mainly through sexual contact, and one of them, HIV, can quietly disarm the body's own defences over many years. Understanding how it is passed on, and how it is not, is the key to stopping it and to clearing up the fear and myths that surround it.

In this lesson you will define a sexually transmitted infection, name HIV as the pathogen that can lead to AIDS, describe exactly how HIV is transmitted, and explain the practical ways the spread of sexually transmitted infections is controlled.

Objectives

  1. Describe a sexually transmitted infection (STI) as an infection that is transmitted through sexual contact
  2. State that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a pathogen that causes an STI
  3. State that HIV infection may lead to AIDS
  4. Describe the methods of transmission of HIV
  5. Explain how the spread of STIs is controlled

Lesson Note

Sexually transmitted infections are a major public-health issue, and HIV in particular has shaped global health policy. Knowing the real routes of transmission lets people protect themselves and avoids stigmatising those infected, since HIV is not spread by everyday contact.
