Where People Live
Overview
For the first time in human history, more than half of all people now live in towns and cities. In 1800 fewer than three in every hundred did. This great shift, called urbanisation, is happening fastest today in the lower income countries of Asia and Africa, where cities can add millions of people in a single decade. Why are the world's cities filling up so quickly, and why is the pace so different from one place to another?
In this lesson you will learn what urbanisation really means, why urban growth rates vary so much around the globe, and the two engines that drive the rapid growth of cities in lower income countries: people moving in from the countryside, and the natural increase of the people already there. You will see how push and pull factors pull these flows together.
