Overview

Energy appears in almost every branch of physics, and its unit - the joule - is one of the most frequently used in any exam paper. But energy calculations also pull in mass, speed, height, force, time, and power, each with its own unit. Keeping track of all eight is the price of getting the numbers right.

This reference lists the units the Edexcel specification requires for the Energy resources and energy transfers section: kilogram, joule, metre, metre per second, metre per second squared, newton, second, and watt. You will see where each unit enters the energy equations and practise quick conversions.

Lesson Note

Energy is measured in joules, but you rarely calculate energy from thin air. You calculate it from mass, speed, height, or force - and each of those quantities carries its own unit. A single missing conversion (grams left as grams, for instance) will make your entire answer wrong.
