Indices II

Overview

Indices II takes the laws of indices you already know and pushes them further, into negative and (at Extended) fractional powers, applied to numbers and algebra alike. Fractional indices are simply another way of writing roots, which links this topic neatly to surds.

In this lesson you will apply the rules of indices with positive, zero and negative powers, and (at Extended) interpret and use fractional indices such as a half meaning a square root.

Objectives

  1. Understand and use indices (positive, zero and negative).
  2. Understand and use the rules of indices.
  3. Understand and use indices (positive, zero, negative and fractional). (Extended only)

Lesson Note

The same handful of index laws simplify huge expressions in one line and connect powers, roots and standard form. Fractional indices in particular unlock a tidy way to handle roots in algebra.
