Overview

The electricity that powers homes, schools and hospitals has to come from somewhere. Some stations burn coal or gas, others split uranium atoms, and a growing number harness wind, water and sunlight. Each method transfers energy through a different chain, and each carries its own balance of benefits and drawbacks.

In this lesson you will trace the energy transfers that occur in fossil fuel, nuclear, wind, hydroelectric, tidal, geothermal and solar power systems. You will then compare renewable and non-renewable resources, weighing reliability, cost, environmental impact and supply - the kind of comparison that appears regularly on Edexcel Papers 1 and 2.

Lesson Note

Flick a light switch and a power station hundreds of kilometres away responds in fractions of a second. Behind that switch sits a chain of energy transfers that begins with a fuel or a natural force and ends with electrical energy flowing through the National Grid. The type of resource at the start of that chain determines the cost, the reliability and the environmental footprint of every unit of electricity delivered.
