Inference And Interpretation Skills
Overview
The specification asks that throughout the qualification you develop the skills of inference and analysis. It is one line, and it sits underneath everything. Inference is what separates a reader who can tell you what a text says from a reader who can tell you what it is doing, and the second reader is the one the mark scheme is written for.
This note is not about a set text. It is about the move itself: how to get from a detail on the page to a claim about meaning, how to tell a defensible inference from a guess, and how to phrase the result so that an examiner can see the evidence and the reasoning in the same sentence. Get this right and every reading answer you write improves at once.
